CALI / CROOKS & CASTLES + BETA UNIT

Both the brands in this entry are based in and were founded in California. They both represent that quintessential California laid back style. As a fun coincidence, Crooks & Castles and Beta Unit are rooted in their foundations as being companies who's designers grew up 80's and 90's.

Crooks and & Castles are proudly LA based streetwear. Though they seem to still be "finding themselves" as a brand and image, if they search for more definition and a develop a clearer focus, their brand might soon advance into a stronger vision.

While I have my reservations about a lot of the clothing that comes out of this brand... with their LA-overly-decorated-but-some-are-strangely-preppy collections... I do like some of their jeans (and a few of their cardigans). Their pants look like they fit right and everyone likes jeans that fit.

Beta Unit, on the other hand, undoubtedly has their act together. Their garments are carefully constructed from high quality fabrics, often with unexpected details and experimental function.
As a small group of designers who grew up in the 80's and 90's, inspiration is
drawn from the unintentional art caused by imperfections and limitations
within technology as seen in primitive computer graphics, ancient photography,
broken fax machines, malfunctioning code, etc... As the name suggests,
Beta Unit prefers and aims to produce the raw, unrendered art form in
their designs.
Now, I usually am not one to like the "distressed" look. But these are dope.
